I’ve had a few people ask me recently about COVID-19 and how it can affect your dogs. As lockdown begins to ease and we begin to return to normal, we have to remember to keep ourselves and others, including our pets, safe. I have listed the main points of how we think COVID can affects animals and how we should respond.
- There is no evidence that the virus can spread to people from skin, hair or fur of animals.
- There have been a small number of cases where dogs and cats have had COVID-19, most were after they had been in close contact with people who were infected. The animals had mild symptoms and recovered well.
- If someone in the house has symptoms, they should isolate from everyone including the pets.
- To keep everyone safe it is recommended that pets do not interact with people who are not from their household, they should be kept on a leash and keep 6ft away from other people.
